Residues of Food Contact Materials in Food

Nadine Bohni is a Laboratory Head at the Official Food Control Authority of the Canton of Zurich in Switzerland. Her laboratory is responsible for the enforcement of, among others, all non-food products regulated by the Swiss food legislation. From 2017 to 2022 she joined the Office of Consumer Protection and Veterinary Affairs St. Gallen where her laboratory was mainly responsible for the enforcement of food legislation of utility articles such as food contact materials and toys. In addition, she is a member of the EDQM working group of the Council of Europe (CoE) and is active in the enforcement of FCM compliance work and supports food safety officers on inspections of FCM businesses.

Andrea Büttner has been Executive Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV since 2020. She is a Food Chemist and completed her doctorate and habilitation in the field of aroma research at the Technical University of Munich. When she joined the Fraunhofer IVV in 2007, she launched the new Product Performance business unit as well as the Department of Sensory Analytics, today's department Sensory Analytics and Technologies. In 2017, she became Deputy Institute Director at the Fraunhofer IVV and a member of the institute's management in 2019. In her current role, she is also spokesperson of the Lead Market Food, deputy spokesperson of the Fraunhofer Strategic Research Field Bioeconomy and on the Board of Management of the Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence Circular Plastics Economy CCPE.

Juan-Carlos Carrillo is a European Registered Toxicologist (ERT) with expertise in Bioengineering, Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology and has been working for Shell International in the Netherlands since 2006. As a Senior Toxicologist he is directly responsible for planning, monitoring and interpreting toxicology studies. At industry level, he has been the chairman of industry task forces in Europe dealing with scientific and regulatory issues regarding the safety of petroleum products (CONCAWE and IPIECA) or Chemicals (CEFIC and ECETOC).

Laurence Castle has been active in the field of FCM for many years. He is a member of the EFSA Working Group on FCM where he was the Chair from 2014 to 2017. He has been a member of the EFSA FAF Panel since 2018 and he has been the Chair of this panel since 2024.

Riccardo Crebelli is a Toxicologist and has been working as director of research at the Department of Environment and Health of the Italian National Institute of Health. He has been the Director of the Department’s Unit on Mechanisms, Biomarker and Models (MBM) until his retirement in 2020. His expertise focused on regulatory and scientific aspects related to genetic toxicology and environmental mutagenesis. He is currently a member of the EFSA FCM Panel and working groups.

Evert Delbanco is a Toxicologist and Chemist and has been working as a Director Food Safety and Toxicology at Siegwerk for 8 years. He is globally responsible for food safety, toxicology and packaging regulations. Prior to his actual role, he was working in corporate regulatory affairs at Henkel. He is a member of several associations and the Chairman of the EuPIA NIAS Risk Assessment Task Force.

Martin Eckardt is a state-certified Food Chemist and has been working as a Researcher at Laboratory Lommatzsch & Säger in Cologne since 2021. He was PhD student of the Technische Universität Dresden at the chair of food science and food contact materials, from 2014 to 2020.

Eddo J. Hoekstra is the Team Leader Food Contact Materials in the Food and Feed Compliance Unit at the Health and Food Directorate of the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission in Geel. He is working in the European Union Reference Laboratory for FCM. Before 2009 he was involved in the development of a “European Acceptance Scheme for Construction Materials in contact with Drinking Water”.

Jessica Irrgang is a Chemical Engineer who did her PhD in Chemistry at the Technical University of Dortmund. Now, she is part of the Technical Application and Innovation Team at Argus Additive Plastics in Germany. Previously she joined Parr Instrument Company as a Sales Engineer and Dichrom as a Product Specialist. Jessica is a member of the German Plastics Association (IK) and its working group on processing aids.

Christian Kirchnawy studied food and biotechnology in Vienna. Since his diploma thesis in 2010 he is working on the application of in-vitro bioassays for the safety assessment of food packaging. For his PhD thesis in technical chemistry he developed test methods for the detection of endocrine active substances. Since 2011 he is leading the Microbiology & Cell Culture department at OFI. The main focus of his work, is on the safety assessment of food contact materials and medical devices.

Taryn Kirsch is a Senior Toxicologist and Group Head at Procter & Gable in Germany. She is also a member of the CosPaTox Steering Committee.

Cristina Nerin is a Full Professor at the University of Zaragoza in Spain and the Director of the University Analytical Research Group (GUIA). She is a Member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Food Packaging Forum (FPF) and a Member of Board of Directors of ILSI Europe. She was also a Member of the WG Recycling in EFSA's CEP Panel from 2010 to 2018. She is author of more than 420 Scientific Publications and principal investigator of more than 300 Research Projects.

Peter K.T. Oldring is a Regulatory Affairs Manager at Sherwin Williams, based in UK and is actively involved in activities to support the can coating business, including chairing various groups such as cross sector group.

Alexandra Ross studied food technology in her function as Product Regulatory Manager EIMEA with H.B. Fuller, she is primarily responsible for all food contact compliance issues across all adhesive technologies. As a member of both the German Adhesives Association IVK and FEICA, the European Association for Adhesives and Sealants, she has worked on many guidelines and position papers around packaging adhesives and food contact. Since 2015 she has been chairman of the Technical Working Group “Paper and Packaging” (FEICA). In this function and beyond, she has given numerous lectures and presentations at special events.

Dieter Schrenk has been a Professor for Food Chemistry and Environmental Toxicology at the University of Kaiserslautern since 1996. In 2005 he took on the full professorship for Food Chemistry and Toxicology. He joined the EFSA CONTAM Panel in 2003 where he was the Chair from 2018 to 2024.

Bastiaan Schupp leads the food contact materials team in DG Health and Food Safety of the European Commission, and works on the subject since 2011. His main legislative responsibly is the general implementation of the legislation on food contact materials, and he has a specific focus on plastics and recycled plastics.

Lionel Spack is a Senior Expert Food Contact Materials in Corporate Operation-Quality Management at Headquarter of Société des Produits Nestlé S.A in Vevey. He was previously FCM Expert within the Nestlé Quality Assurance Center (NQAC) supporting the Zone EMENA (Europe, Middle East, North Africa). Earlier he was Packaging QA specialist at the Nestlé Research Center. He is involved in international associations, e.g. in the International Association of Environmental Analytical Chemistry (IAEAC), Schweizerische Verpackungsinstitut-Joint Industry Group and FoodDrinkEurope.

Katharina Volk has been Scientific Officer within the FCM team of EFSA since 2015.
