Behaviour of Pesticides in Air, Soil and Water

Colin Brown is a Professor in Environmental Science at the University of York/UK. He has more than 20 years experience of research into the fate and effects of organic contaminants in the environment.

Joachim Dayteg joined the Institute for Plant Protection Products of AGES Vienna in 2008 as an Environmental Fate and Behaviour Risk Assessor. He is the initiator of the harmonisation efforts in fate and behaviour in the Central zone.

Alice Dove has been working with the Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency in the Environmental Assessment Directorate since 2022 and she has over 20 years of experience working in water quality monitoring for the Canadian federal government. She will discuss Health Canada’s new, national water monitoring program for pesticides, for which extensive engagement has been conducted with stakeholders, and the two year Pilot Program to sample and analyze currently used pesticides at sites across Canada.

Emilie Farama has been the Deputy Head of the Ecotoxicology and E-Fate Risk Assessment Unit for Pesticides and Fertilisers at ANSES since 2018. She joined ANSES in 2006 as an Environmental Fate and Behaviour Risk Assessor for active substances and plant protection products.

Nicolas Givaudan has a background as Agronomist and Ecotoxicologist and has worked as an Environmental Risk Assessor at the Danish Environmental Protection Agency (DEPA) for over 5 years. His emphasis is on environmental fate and behavior and ecotoxicology of pesticides.

Ian Hardy has worked as a Research Leader at Battelle UK for 21 years. His emphasis is on degradation kinetics, environmental exposure and risk assessment.

James Hingston leads a team of 26 regulatory environmental fate specialists at the Chemicals Regulation Division, part of the UK Health and Safety Executive. CRD is the national regulator for the whole of the UK, on behalf of the UK government and the devolved administrations, with responsibility for pesticides, biocides, detergents and general chemicals under REACH.

Bernhard Jene is an Environmental Scientist at BASF in Limburgerhof with a PhD in soil physics. He has more than 20 years of experience in the area of environmental fate and exposure modelling of pesticides.

Volker Laabs has been with BASF for 9 years and is currently leading the Global Product Stewardship Team. He has more than 15 years experience in the area of environmental fate of pesticides.

Ludovic Mayer has been a PhD Student in Environment and Health at RECETOX (Masaryk University) in Brno, Czech Republic, since 2020. His PhD focuses on the atmospheric fate of currently used pesticides in the atmosphere, for which he is involved in multiples project and collaborations, most notably as the principal contributor of the PESPAT project. His other research are focusing on investigating and improving the current knowledge of atmospheric pesticides processes such as depositions, gas-particle partitioning and air-soil exchange.

Dieter Schäfer has a professional background in environmental sciences and 25 years of experience in the environmental fate and exposure assessment of pesticides. He was the Head of the E-fate Expert Group and the Environmental Exposure Modelling Team at Bayer Crop Science Division in Monheim/Germany and is currently the Head of Environmental Exposure leading a team of experimental, modelling and assessment experts.

Rômulo Penna Scorza Júnior is a senior researcher for 20 years at Embrapa (Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation) and has worked on pesticide fate and exposure modelling in Brazilian agricultural scenarios.

Balthasar Smith is working as an executive officer in the Department Plant Protection Products of the German Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) since 2004. His tasks include risk management of fungicides within the authorisation procedures of plant protection products, but also the development of new risk mitigation measures and improvement of organisational processes.

Robin Sur is a Distinguished Science Fellow at Bayer Crop Science Division. He has been working for 23 years in the crop protection industry, e.g. as a Head of Laboratory, Environmental Modelling Expert, Global Lead Expert Water Quality, and currently Risk Mitigation Strategy Lead.

Aaldrik Tiktak is working as a Senior Researcher Soil and Water at the Netherlands PBL Environmental Assessment Agency in Bilthoven and is member of the EFSA PPR Panel. He is involved in policy evaluation and environmental risk assessment of pesticides.

Nathalie Vallotton is a Global Regulatory Environmental Science Manager at Dow Europe. She is member of the ECETOC task force on “Persistent chemicals and water resources protection” and is a member of the Cefic Persistence Issue Team.

Harry Vereecken is a Professor and the Director of the Institute Agrosphere within the Department of Bio- and Geosciences at the Forschungszentrum Jülich.

Mark Williams has a background in biochemistry and biomedicine and is a Policy Officer in the Pesticides and Biocides Unit at DG SANTE. Mark is working primarily on the implementation of Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009, focused on topics related to the approval of active substances and the decision making process for new substances, renewal of approval and confirmatory information. In addition, Mark works on the development of new legislation and guidance, including most recently the new implementing rules for renewal of approval and the guidance on emergency authorisations. He is also involved in various activities related to groundwater and drinking water. Before joining the Commission in 2015 he worked at the Health and Safety Executive in the UK.
